Fight free radicals with Antioxidants and Age Healthier?
Absolutely. Studies show when mice have higher antioxidant levels they live longer. Now we’re not mice for sure, but the body of science on aging and disease in respect to us humans is definitely in favor of keeping high levels of antioxidants in our bodies.
By the way, not only can we live longer and healthier lives, we could look better too. That just happens to be an added bonus, because remember, without your health you have nothing no matter how pretty, handsome, normal, and succesful you are.
I love, love, love all kinds of antioxidants. I was trying to think which one would I pick today. Keeping with my theme of the alphabet and not going too much further from the A theme I’m going to emphasize today beta carotene. Why? Because it is a wonderful antioxidant and something you can really chew on.
Get your pad and pen out and here’s your list for your next farmers market run: carrots, canteloupe, kale, winter squash, sweet potatoes, spinach, apricots, hmmm, there is at least a range of theme here. What I mean is sometimes you can choose foods high in beta carotene based on their color(orange/red). Beta carotene gives fruit and vegetables their color. BUT sometimes i.e. kale, spinach, and now I’m going to throw in supplements such as: chlorella and spirulina which have super high beta carotene content are green you say? Yes, but when you look under a spectometer which shows a spectrum of light you see…………the colors of the rainbow and orange and red are there.
Finally, as I like to keep my posts short, eat a lot of beta carotene rich foods. My two posts before mentioned if your body needs vitamin A, it will convert beta carotene to vitamin A. If you don’t need vitamin A, beta carotene will not store in your cells in your liver(some people concerned too much is toxic, only in the fat soluble i.e. fish oil version can it be toxic).
Hope that stimulates you to eat orange, red and green. Talk to you next week!
