Moods, foods, and keeping balanced
Well I just took my spoonful of fish oil, yum. Or maybe not’s quite the word to use. I do it because my favorite food to affect moods are the omega 3 fatty acids. Now somewhere along the way someone has asked me about how do foods affect moods. So since I’m feeling kinda moody today, I thought to answer in part your question.
Our brains are about 70% fat, grey matter, phospholipids, fatty acids, amino acids, a maze of chemistry in our heads. When I recently saw this npr post about how prozac is at it’s highest, I just thought how can we help ourselves produce the good chemicals in our brains for positive results.
Having worked for a fatty acid company I was immersed into the fatty acid kingdom and all the regulating benefits they offer from hormones, to blood pressure to brain chemistry. But I must say there is a therapeutic dose compared to the usage of drugs. Sometimes when I work with clients I use therapeutic doses to really saturate the cells for the first 6 months. So please don’t expect a quick response from your body if you choose to start supplementing with omega 3 fatty acids for moods. And you must ingest enough of them to really gain benefit.
Some would say flax, walnuts, soy, chia seeds, hemp seeds are also good sources of omega 3’s. They are, but chemistry in our bodies shows fish oil to be the most easily absorbed and utilized omega 3 without having to go through an enzymatic process. Whew, see what you can do.
These days I’d have to say supplementing with a liquid or capsule is needed as we just can’t seem to get enough in our diet. Yes, it would be nice to eat enough fish, but what about the mercury?
I’ll talk about that soon again. Until then enjoy your day, eat even more healthy than you’re used to and stay tuned.
