Discipline and Nutrition, Where’s the Enjoyment?

I was at this breakfast business function and had brought my own snacks knowing the hosts would probably have bagels, butter, creme cheese, jam, coffee, orange juice, and that just adds up to way too many bad carbohydrates and bad fat. So I’m sitting with friends at a table and as I pull my healthy snacks out the woman next to me says, “Meg, you gotta live a little”. Like she wanted me to join in the food fest of bagels, jam, and creme cheeses galore.  I turned to her and said laughing ”Julie, trust me, I lived a lot last night”. In other words, I pick my times and choices of outside the good nutrition box when I want, and I enjoy it thoroughly. I have discipline over what I choose(most of the time). And I want to maintain my health fitness so I choose discipline to get me there.

When you’re dieting and starting to choose really healthy foods, I want you to remember it’s for the majority of your diet with some side tangents to enjoy one of life’s pleasures, food . And when social, fun, and special occasions pop up, you choose wisely and eat less.

What I’m hoping to get across to you today is that this is for your health to eat well and get to the fittest, healthiest body ever. As you do that, of course you’re going to enjoy life’s pleasures, but you know how you’ll feel and look the next day which motivates you to keep your portions small.

I remember once George Clooney had to gain alot of weight for a part he was playing and then the next time you saw him he had lost all the weight already. At an interview he was asked, “George, how did you lose the weight?”. George answered, “Well, I did the eat less diet”. Perfect George, I couldn’t have said it any better. Well, maybe I’d say eat less and let me individualize your food plan to your type. But the point is it takes discipline for your nutrition to reach your goals of weight management.

I wish I could say it was really fun, but in being able to put your clothes on you haven’t fit into for years, or dropped the weight and now feel sexy again, or your energy is so good and you sleep great now, are just a few areas you’ll benefit in. That’s where the enjoyment is.

Just a bit more philosophical today and less technical. Wishing you lot’s of enjoyment and good nutrition on your health journey to fitness.

  1. I had to laugh today Meg, because I thought of this post during my day today. I was with a co-worker who stopped to get lunch at Wendy’s. When I declined the wonderful smelling french fries he offered me, he told me to “hey, live a little.” An hour later after I finished my salmon and took my multi green supplements, I got a “Wow, you really are a goody two shoes when it comes to eating and health stuff aren’t you?”

I thought to myself that when I go on vacation next week, I’ll be living a LOT when I indulge in all the fresh fruit and a few tropical cocktails! And I won’t feel rotten in a bikini! You have to pick and choose I guess. But my question Meg, is how do you stay so strong? And why does it feel like everyone is trying to derail you? Do they just feel guilty about what they’re eating, and don’t want to see someeone eating so healthfully? Why do they tease and encourage you to eat fries and girl scout cookies?!!

  2. Hi Serene,
Ah yes, what is it with those people we work with, our family, our relationships that they don’t encourage us to stay on track.
I mean on one hand I think they’re litely joking, and they do feel a bit guilty. So when they see you, me, all of you reading who eat well, they’re thinking oh if I can get her to eat bad with me, I won’t feel bad. Ugh, I don’t want to sound heavy, psychological/emotional, but it’s true, food is, so there you are. No wonder there’s overeaters anonymous.
You had a strong mind and you knew you’d be in a bikini very soon, not your co-worker, what’s his name. So that gave you strength and motivation. And that’s where I get my motivation. I mean it’s about health, a little vanity, and absolutely I want to look good in my clothes, ok more vanity. But it’s always about being healthy, fit, alive, so we can enjoy all the other pleasures of life.
So like a duck let it slide off your back(wish I had something better than that). And as you did, think how great you’re going to look and feel in that bikini with your fit body, high five! Oh, and as important great health.
This is why fat vs thin blog is here too. To support, high five when you need it, and keep you eating super healthy 99% of the time.
So when that 1% comes you can live A LOT!
Thanks Serene and keep in touch when you go on vacation, we want to hear how much fun you’re having.
