The controversy of B17; vitamin not bomber

Well, there is a bomber plane called a B17, but I’m talking about the vitamin which has it’s own issues. Back in the 70’s there came to be known a substance called laetrile.  There were some huge claims that laetrile which comes from apricot and is the apricot seeds were so therapeutic to eat, it could even prevent cancer. Now, this is a claim the FDA did not like, and of course the pharmaceutical companies did not like even more, as they can’t patent it. Having said that remember, I’m not a doctor, don’t claim to be, and you should always run supplements by your doctor to make sure they’re ok, especially if you’re taking pharmaceutical drugs.

B17 is not available to us, if anything you’d have to go to Europe or probably do some detective work here in America to find out where you could get some if you wanted.

I don’t have an opinion on this b vitamin. I think anytime you hear a cure all one should be cautious and do the research so you make the wisest choice.

Just wanted to keep the controversial B17 in the mix since I’m covering the b vitamins. So far I’ve mentioned quite a few in previous posts and I hope you see how important they are for keeping your nerves, digestion, hair color, ears, protein digestion, healthy cholesterol levels and so much more in balance.

Chemistry my friends, vitamins and nutritional science is understanding your bodies chemistry and I hope you’re learning each time you read. Now B smart.

What would choline do without inositol?

B vitamins, that’s what I’m talking about this week. The enemies of the B’s are alcohol, coffee, estrogen, sulfa drugs, and refined, processed foods.  Well, if you’re like most of us, we’re bound to be doing one of those. And they’re water soluble so your body excretes them every day. So my case in point is to remember to take a good b complex supplement, or you’re going to have to have a very, very incredibly healthy diet. I take b vitamins, but I have my own secret nutritional reasons too. Those you’d have to come see me for as I certainly can’t just give a way my secrets.

So, let’s get back to inositol. The importance of inositol is very similar to choline and they both really need each other to work efficiently in your body.  Yesterday’s post talked about lecithin which is a great source of choline, but also inositol. That is why I really like lecithin to add to shakes or you could get a capsule to take.

It’s so healthy for metabolizing fats in your body just like I mentioned how egg whites are high in choline they are also high in inositol. So your lesson is that both choline and inositol help break fats down. Here’s a twister to think about. Cholesterol and hormones are fats too, so you make the correlation to supporting fat metabolism, and breaking fats down to be utilized.

Make sure you eat the whole egg, whites and yolks, make sure you get your b vitamins every day, and start getting better about your nutrition for your energy, health, sex life, beauty, anti aging, and aging gracefully. Eat your beeeeeeeeeez.

Less is thin otherwise known as lecithin

Tags: , ,

There’s hopefully a lot of wisdom in today’s title for you. Back in the day when Adele Davis was one of the well known nutritionists in the 60’s and 70’s she touted the important nutritonal advice. One of her famous books I remember reading growing up in my household was Let’s Get Well. What an impact it had on me as a teenager and was intstrumental on my path as a nutritionist.

Today is about lecithin…….a wonderful, wonderful fat emulsifier. Yes, it helps to break fats down. Guess what egg whites are high in??? That’s right lecithin. See mother nature knows to put the balance together. If egg yolks are fat than egg whites are fat emulsifiers to break the fats down in your body and be digested. You know I’m all about the whole egg. Or I should say the whole organic fed, grass fed, range free, no hormone, antibiotic, or corn fed, organic egg, whew. What a mouth ful.

Ok, so you can buy lecithin which is high in the B vitamin choline(for short), which is so very good for any cell, organ, membrane(brain), to stay alive and well. I now add lecithin to my shakes to garner the nutrients it gives my body. Do I wish I could just eat the foods to give my body and mind the nutrition it needs? Absolutely. Do I believe I can get it all from foods? No way. I want great health, a fit body, a fit mind, longevity with health and no dis ease.

Now, eat less, eat well and I’d say add the lecithin for your mind.  Think.

Do you need a shot of B12?

Tags: , , ,

Popularized by doctors interested in nutrition, sports nutrition, and nutritionists, B12 is great for a kick in the butt or I should say a shot in the butt for energy. No, literally…B12 shots for quick energy and absorption into your body is very popular today too. But for most of us we’re not going to the doctor to get our shots today so how and why should we look out for foods high in B12 or take a supplement?

Genomics. I’m becoming fascinated with this subject because when I read the article using b vitamins to keep the genes healthy I thought YES!, we are validating the science of nutrition and taking supplements or foods for specific nutrients to the core of our health. The switch which turns on and off our gene expressions and b vitamins are critical, yes critical my friends.

Got low energy? Instead of reaching for red bull which is only for a short kick and then you’re down again, I say reach for the b’s and if you’re vegetarian or vegan, definitely reach for the B12. B12 intrinsic factor for your digestion of proteins in your stomach is super important. IF you go to my newstrition facebook posts(and please become a fan!!) you’ll see a question I pointed to you……is eating quality food important or is absorption more important? Well, I’ll start with absorption is more important.

B 12 is important for protein absorption and so many other things I’ve hoped you’ve learned or picked up from this post. I’m going to take my b complex right now for my energy and vitality. You? Are you going to boost your nutrition with some Beeee’s??

Aaaaahhh, to B 12 again

Nope, I’d rather take a B12 supplement than be twelve again. But if you need more energy at this stage of your life than by all means let’s discuss B12. Or otherwise known as methylcobalamin. And you know what vitamin helps B12 be absorbed? Go back to yesterday’s post and there’s your answer. I’m impressing you with the importance in most instances to take the whole b complex together.

As a nutritionist I would definitely isolate different b vitamins for different reasons, but for the general public take them together. This is what I have found so interesting as I was researching B12. Do you know they say that it is only found in animal meat, eggs and dairy? This one article suggests how vegans have such a hard time getting B12 because they don’t eat meat.

Well my friends, plankton to the rescue. One of the richest sources of B12 is found in one of my favorite algae’s, spirulina. As a matter of fact I just swallowed about 8 little tablets for an afternoon lift.

Ok, B12 is so important to help make  healthy red blood cells, you must get it in a suppelment or in your diet. ( I almost feel I need to write another post on B12 because I have so much to say about it.)

But what you need to know today is you need to take a look at your diet and make sure you’re getting good sources of B12. And of course I extend an invitation for you to see your local Santa Monica nutritionist Meg.

Sources of B12; liver(yuk), beef, pork, eggs, cheese(too cheesey) and kidney(no thanks)…I’d much rather take my delicious b12 supplement.

B co dependent to B 6

If we could all get the vitamins and nutrients from our foods and have no stress, chemicals, synthetics, radiation, mercury, pesticides, herbicides, hormone injected meats, dairy, eggs, pharmaceutical drugs adverse reactions…… hmmm, do I need to make my point any clearer? We need supplements!!! We just need to get educated about what these are, how, when and why to take them. I’m here to share my quick tips and educate you with knowledge to make better choices.

Ok, onward to B6, whoa, otherwise known as: pyridoxine, pyridoximine, pyridoxal 5 phosphate, I think that covers it. Remember this b and all the b’s are water soluble. You need to keep taking them every day so they can support your health of nerves, protein metabolism, healthy red blood cells, and act as a catalyst to many vitamin uptake functions.  Usually they get excreted from your body in 8 hours!!

Do you eat cabbage, blackstrap molasses, milk, eggs, beef, brewer’s yeast every day? Because this is where you’ll find the naturally occuring sources of B6.  So you don’t eat most of these foods?

The robbers of B6 are alcohol, stress, estrogens(i.e. birth control pills, hrt), stress, you get my point. It’s hard to get B6 in your diet and it’s very important you do.

I love my b vitamins, I take them two times a day I love them so much. I hope you start loving them soon and either get them from your foods or ask me, Meg, which supplement to take to provide these b’s for your health!

So instead of go for the gold today, I’m going to say GO for the B’s!!!

Can biotin keep your hair from turning grey?

Wow, if that’s true than we’ve got a very, very important b vitamin to talk about today. This is the thing. Thinking out loud here, we have DNA which is programmed with messages which play out in our physical lives. Hence the more gene research they do, science can find what may or may not turn off and on genes which lead to dis ease and my thought, aging.

Now, Time Magazine had an article on the genome factor and what kept these genes healthy and nourished? One of the nutrients they found was………..b vitamins. Remember, when we’re under physical, mental, environmental, and emotional stress our bodies use up b vitamins very, very quickly.

Biotin is usually found in nuts, egg yolks(another reason to eat the whole egg), brewer’s yeast and some organ meats.  I like taking a b complex supplement. I do have my fav’s.

So, your challenge is to get all your b vitamins from foods and don’t have stress in your life? Or eat as well as you can, do stress reduction techniques and take a good supplement of b vitamins.  Keep your color!!

It’s good to be 3(b3)

Now here’s a b vitamin that has really got some pull. B3 is also known as niacin, niacinamide and nicotinic acid, yes all different forms of the same b3. As I’ve mentioned before the b’s really work together well when put together in a b complex. That’ is they are all found in one product: capsule, tablet, powder and can help each other be better absorbed. This is the synergy factor.

Of course I’d like you to get all your b vitamins from foods. But have I mentioned our foods usually do not contain the nutrient amounts once found before world war 2? And with all the stress, chemicals, estrogenic hormones found in plastics, stress(oh yea mentioned that) from environment like radiation…..need I go on. It’s just almost plain impossible to get the kind of nutrients in our foods and beverages we once had.

Back to B3. Wow, did you ever take a b vitamin and start getting red all over and your skin on your arms or legs felt warm and itchy? NO, you’re not suffering an allergy to the b vitamin. That’s niacin opening your capillaries so blood can flow more freely.

Cholesterol support, healthy nerves, great looking skin, better digestion, yes, yes, all can be had with good nutrition. And your B’s are definitely involved with all of that.

Brewers yeast(a 1960’s favorite), egg yolks(eat the whole egg!), avocados, dates, figs, and prunes all contain this incredible healing b vitamin. Go grocery shopping and make sure some of these foods are in your cart.

Now, b good, b wise and more on the anti aging(didnt’ mention but it’s true!) B’s tomorrow……….

Beguile: to deceive, to engage interest of……

Sorry for the side bar away from b complex vitamins, but maybe later I’ll post a favorite b of mine, b3.

I had to show you this link regarding sugar. With Valentine’s Day coming up and every day of your life, I want you to get off the bad sugar. I’m talking the heavy soda drinking, juice drinking(yes, juice), adding sugar to coffee, tea, or whatever sugar laden sweet you can’t seem to break the habit.

Remember my favorites: xylitol, agave, and stevia to use in place of in drinks and food. Now read the following link. And ladies and gentleman, we haven’t heard the last of this granulated, syrupy, all dressed in white and so sweet bad guy. Don’t let it beguile you. This one can kill you. I said that to impress how important changing your diet can be, and the link below is the tip of the iceberg.

Let’s talk about B too(2)

Remember it’s very important to get your b vitamins everyday as they are classified as water soluable vitamins. So stress, alcohol, sugar, coffee, and poor diet will all rob your body of b vitamins.

Back to B2. Otherwise known as ribolflavin, it is another important vitamin for helping nourish nerves, keep strong hair, skin, nails, and healthy lips. I always like to intertwine nutrients to how much of a beauty product they can really be for us too.

Now, Spring is coming again in about a month or so, and it’s going to be time to talk about healthy, lite eating. I bring this up because B2 can be found in leafy greens, fish, eggs, brewers yeast and of course in a vitamin supplement.

I mentioned the best way to take your b’s is together. The synergy which helps them be better absorbed is the main reason and you’ll find they can give you energy. Always take them with food, it’s just so much better digested. And some people may even experience a stomach cramp(ugh) if you take a high dose on an empty stomach. So take with food!

Now again, B Good, good nutrition that is….talk to you tomorrow
